Clarinet Concerto, Pts
Narrative
A generational story about families and the special place they inhabit, sharing love, loss, laughter and life. Based on the comic book "Here" by Richard McGuire. It was first published as a strip in the comic book magazine "Raw" in 1989 and expanded into a 300-page graphic novel in 2014. At one point early in the film, Richard’s father lists several towns that he believes are along the Pennsylvania Turnpike, when in fact they are all towns along Interstate 80 in PA, which had not yet been built. [from trailer] Richard: You know, if you want, you can spend the rest of the night here. Margaret: I could spend the rest of my life here… Features They Stooge to Conga (1943).
I didn’t know what to expect from «Here» for two reasons
1 and 2 Written by Artie Shaw Performed by Artie Shaw and his Orchestra Courtesy of RCA RecordsBy arrangement with Sony Music Entertainment. First, I hadn’t been following director Robert Zemeckis’ filmography closely lately. I’d seen all-time classics from him in the «Back to the Future» trilogy; the «Who Framed Roger Rabbit» trilogy; and «Forrest Gump»; and underrated gems like «Death Becomes Her,» «What Lies Beneath,» and «The Polar Express,» so I hadn’t been disappointed by it yet. Second, I knew in advance that they’d used artificial intelligence to age Tom Hanks and Robin Wright. In a year of remarkable advances in AI and nearly a year after the SAG-AFTRA attacks, «Here» appears to be the first major Hollywood film to make extensive use of the technology. Still, I was willing to go in with an open mind. Having seen it, one vital element keeps it from becoming a classic, but that’s a good thing.
For starters, the actors deliver
Thirty years after their pairing in «Forrest Gump,» Tom Hanks and Robin Wright deliver compelling performances as Richard and Margaret Young, as their story of surviving the central house makes up the bulk of the story. As for another standout, Paul Bettany commits as Richard’s father, Al. Robert Zemeckis directs this incredibly ambitious film in a way that’s distinctly Zemeckis. The story is unique, with the film following a (mostly) uninterrupted shot of the house over the centuries, and it deserves a director who can make it special. Every Zemeckis film I’ve seen and reviewed has been magical, and «Here» is no exception. I felt the film’s opening scene was beautiful and a flawless way to open it. It shows what the film will offer over the next 1 hour and 45 minutes, making it one of its defining scenes.
I liked the main storyline revolving around the Young family
I have mixed to positive feelings about the film’s use of AI. Aside from a few moments, the aging was wildly convincing, and Hanks and Wright seemed much younger than they are now. I say mixed, more or less, because I’m not the biggest fan of the use of AI in media, and I’m one of many who believe that creativity in Hollywood is only human. Moving on to the negatives worth mentioning: the film’s time division and utilization aren’t great. However, they occasionally cut to other time periods, which felt like an excuse to further sell a fixed-frame gimmick. The additional storylines had emotional moments, but the characters lacked development. Any feelings of sadness worked during the time we spent with the Youngs.
Overall, «Here» was mostly a success
This may be an unavoidable annoyance, as the main plot may not have been nearly as long as the 1:45 running time. It won’t be the season winner, as «Conclave» and «Anora» are also in theaters. However, as a film fan who appreciates Hanks and Zemeckis and was intrigued by the experimental nature of this film, it was enjoyable.
