In the heart of a bustling Times Square kitchen, dreams and desperation collide as employees pursue the elusive American dream. Arnold Wesker’s play The Kitchen, relocated from 1950s London to a contemporary diner in downtown New York; shows that its theme is still alive and relevant despite nearly seventy years.
Meanwhile, one of the cooks, Pedro, tries to convince his waitress lover not to abort their child
Important plot points have been altered, but the overall theme remains the same, as the overworked diner employees go through the daily grind of putting food on the table for the most demanding of customers. At the start of «The Kitchen»; $800 has gone missing from the cash register, prompting an internal investigation that is causing additional stress for the employees.
It’s a weak link
Many of the workers are immigrants and the environment is harsh, profane, tough and combative. Black-and-white cinematography, gorgeous direction and astonishing performances capture these elements in a fantastic display of cinematic pyrotechnics that leaves one with one’s jaw dropped in amazement.
It’s a shame because there’s so much to admire
Several scenes drag on too long – the break between lunch and dinner feels a little long – and while Raúl Briones can’t help but give an impressive performance, Pedro’s histrionics become tiresome shortly before the end.
